From Gas to Hot Air with Leister’s Conversion Kit

Powering the Future of Coffee

Over the past two years, Leister has dedicated significant effort toward supporting the Coffee Roasting industry’s shift from natural gas to electric heating—an evolution driven by rising operational costs and growing environmental concerns.

As part of this initiative, Carr New Zealand has partnered with John Gordon from Silverback Coffee in Auckland to convert a traditional gas-powered coffee roaster to a fully electric hot air system. This collaborative project marks an important step toward sustainable roasting solutions.

At the heart of this innovation is Leister’s newly developed Coffee Conversion Kit.

The kit features a LE-10000 17kW double flange heater fitted with a food-grade element, ensuring both performance and compliance with food safety standards.

This heater is paired with the robust Chinook blower to enable heat recirculation for enhanced efficiency.

Designed with user convenience in mind, the kit includes all necessary components for a virtually plug-and-play installation.

On the 19th of February, John Gordon together with Matt Allan, Carr New Zealand’s Leister Sales Manager, commenced the conversion process. Thanks to comprehensive pre-planning—including mounting arrangements and the fabrication of a custom plate—the team completed the full system installation in just two hours. All programming and wiring were prepared in advance to streamline the setup.

Following installation, the system was powered on and rigorously tested, delivering outstanding results. The final phase of the project involved roasting a batch of coffee beans, successfully demonstrating the system’s capabilities in a real-world scenario.

The completion of this project, underscores Leister and Carr New Zealand’s ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability, and providing our customers with cutting-edge solutions that meet the evolving demands of the industry.
